The BTEC National Certificate provides a specialist work related qualification that covers the key knowledge and practical skills required in the field of laboratory technicians in a wide range of vocational situations, eg quality control to forensic or medical science.

The qualification offers an engaging programme of 100% internally assessed material for those students who are clear about the area of employment that they wish to enter.

Assessment
This course is 100% coursework which is internally assessed and verified by the Programme manager, externally verified by the examination board.

  • Fundamentals of science
  • Working in the Science Industry
  • Science Investigation
  • Science Practical Techniques
  • Perceptions of Science
  • Application of numbers for Science technicians
Specialist Units
Mathematics for Science Technicians Plus 6 additional specialist units that are likely to include:-
  • Using science in the work place
  • Physiology of human body systems
  • Biochemical techniques
  • Energy changes, sources and Applications
  • Electrical circuits and their industrial Applications
Although there may be some opportunity to study other alternative units.
Entry Requirements
5A* - C GCSE's to include either 2 Science GCSE at C or above. Or and a pass in BTEC First Diploma in Applied Science.
Career Opportunities
High Education vocational qualifications. Eg BTEC Higher National Certificate in Applied Science; Degree in Applied Biology; Clinical Science of Forensic Science; Level 4 NVQ qualification.
