Course Description | There are two alternative courses that can be studied at both AS and A Level Mathematics - Pure with Mechanics or Pure with Statistics & Decision Mathematics. Both courses are modular, each consisting of six modules:
Course Content - AS Pure with mechanics Core 1 - Core 2 - Mechanics 1 Pure with statistics & decision Core 1 - Core 2 - Statistics 1
Course Content - A2 Pure with mechanics Core 3 - Core 4 - Mechanics 2 Pure with statistics & decision Core 3 - Core 4 - Decision 1
Core 1,2,3 & 4: include algebra, functions, equations and inequalities, indices, sequences and series, co-ordinate geometry, trigonometry, differential and integral calculus, numerical methods, exponentials and logarithms and vectors. Mechanics 1& 2: incorporate the application of vector algebra, kinematics of motion in a line or on a plane, projectiles, equilibrium, Newton's laws of motion, work, energy, power, momentum and impulse, centre of mass, elasticity and collisions. Statistics 1: involves the study of data collection, graphical representation, measures of location and dispersion, probability, random variables and the Normal distribution. Decision 1: includes algorithms on networks, decision making in networks, critical path analysis, flow in networks, linear programming and matching. |
