Course Title | Human Biology | Awarding Body | OCR | Course Level | AS & A2 | Course Description | Human Biology is for students who wish to study biology specialising in aspects that relate particularly to humans. This course adopts an approach based on situations in the 'real world' e.g. biomedical, health, caring professions and sports and leisure studies. The content of this course makes it of general interest and it complements other subjects i.e. psychology, health and social care and sport science and other sciences. | Course Content - AS | Unit 1 - Molecules, Blood and Gas Exchange: This unit covers the detailed study of blood, a healthy heart, heart disease and cardiac arrest and how lifestyle choices and modern living affect the respiratory system. Unit 2 - Growth, Development and Disease: This module includes stem cell technology. The 'disease' section covers antibiotics, vaccinations and the role of the public health service in controlling the spread of infectious disease. Unit 3 Students will be required to complete three tasks provided by the examination board and internally assessed. These tasks will test the skills of observation, measurement and evaluation.
| Course Content - A2 | Unit 4 - Energy, Reproduction and Populations: Students develop and understanding of cell energy production, effects of exercise on the body and performance enhancing drugs. Additional looking at drugs that modify brain function with specific reference to Parkinson's disease. Unit 5 - Genetics, Control and Ageing: With the completion of the Human Genome project more genetic diseases are being diagnosed, and the treatment using genetic engineering is of considerable public interest. Unit 6 This module further develops the students practical skills and application of their knowledge and, as in AS, this is assessed by the completion of three practical tasks, set by the exam board and internally assessed. | Career Opportunities | Developing skills of communication, analysis, argument, thinking, etc makes History ideal for a variety of careers including Law, Media, Management, Teaching as well as archivist and museum work. | Entry Requirements | GCSE Dual Award Science Grade C in the component to be studied at A Level (*see note) or GCSE Biology Grade C | Further Information | Mrs K.
