Course Title | Home Economics | Awarding Body | OCR | Course Level | AS & A2 | Course Description | This course builds on knowledge gained from GCSE Design Technology Food and also accommodates candidates coming new to the subject. Candidates benefit from a coherent, flexible and worthwhile course of study and become equipped with skills needed for analysis, planning and evaluation of tasks, together with essential life skills. | Course Content - AS | A one year course, normally taken in Year 12. Unit 1: Students will investigate topics such as 'Family and Society', 'Environmental Issues' and 'Social Issues'. Unit 2: Students will research 'resources', 'Food Provision', 'Food Preparation' and 'Food Safety and Hygiene'. Both Unit 1 and Unit 2 are externally assessed and consist of two 11/2 hour exam papers. | Course Content - A2 | Unit 3: Students will complete an 'Investigative Study' which will allow them to develop a task and produce a piece of coursework detailing their findings. This Unit is internally assessed and will incorporate some practical work. Unit 4: Students will learn about 'Nutrition and Food Production' and will include looking at topics such as special dietary needs, designing and developments in the Food Industry. | Assessment | 75 % exam and 25% coursework. | Career Opportunities | The qualification is particularly suitable for students choosing to go on to a full range of courses in higher education and/or careers in, for example; Retail Management, Human Resource Management or work in the Food Technology Industry. | Entry Requirements | 5 grades at GCSE including English and Maths.
